Playground Wood Mulch Fires

The summer of 2007 was one for the record books. The southeastern United States dried to a crisp under relentless heat and sun, uninterrupted by rains for weeks at a time. For some places, it was the worst drought since weather records have been kept.

Meanwhile, in Texas, the summer began with record setting rainfall, which was followed by a heat wave. Fire officials believe that this combination of the elements led to a school playground in Arlington Texas catching fire in August of that year. Other playground fires had been reported close to that time, but in those cases, officials were unable to rule out human intervention.

The Arlington fire, however, was on surveillance video from beginning to end, and there was nobody around to start the fire. The camera caught the mulch growing discolored, and then smoking before erupting in flames. However, once flames became visible, the fire spread rapidly, melting plastic equipment and belching thick, black smoke into the air. Fortunately, fire officials concluded that the playground was not close enough to the school to cause a fire threat to it.

The series of weather-related events leading up to the spontaneous combustion was unusual. The heavy rains during the first part of summer caused the mulch to begin to decompose. Once the rains stopped and the heat began, decomposition sped up. Decomposition releases heat, and the wood mulch on the playground was no exception.

According to the Arlington, Texas Deputy Fire Marshal Keith Eber, mulch must be turned over frequently to keep excessive heat from building up. "If you have not turned it in the last two weeks, you probably cannot stick your hand in it," he told The Dallas Morning News.

Fire officials say that in severe heat, mulch can easily catch fire. Landscape islands around shopping malls have been known to erupt in flames multiple times in one day, stretching fire department resources thin. It is important for mulch to be raked regularly to avoid this. Before the playground fire, the Arlington school policy was to rake playground mulch every 30 days. Once it was determined that the mulch in the one playground caught fire spontaneously, the school system replaced wood mulch with pea gravel in every playground that had been using wood mulch.

While it took a "perfect storm" to produce the conditions that caused the Arlington playground fire in 2007, the school system there decided not to take any chances. Fortunately for Arlington, other choices for playground surfacing abound. Rubber mulch made from ground up tires is one option. While there is no conclusive evidence, there are people who say that rubber mulch leeches chemicals into the soil. Pea gravel, as was used post-fire in Arlington, is another option, but it is more expensive. On the other hand, pea gravel does not ever have to be replaced, just supplemented as enough bits of gravel go home in shoes to make a difference.

There are also solid playground surfaces that are poured in place, or that come in thick, snap-together tiles that can be put on top of a concrete pad. While these surfaces are expensive to install, they are much easier for children in wheelchairs to use, and would not have had the decomposition/heat risk that the wood mulch in Arlington did.

Playground surfaces have come a long way since the poured concrete of the mid twentieth century. While playgrounds are safer than ever, the wood mulch fire in Arlington in 2007 showed that accidents can happen when circumstances come together in just the right way.

Fire Extinguisher Classifications - How to Understand Each Class of Fire Extinguisher

Fire Extinguisher Classifications - How to Understand Each Class of Fire Extinguisher

ItemTitle

All fire extinguishers are given a classification, primarily in order to show what kind of fires they are safe to use on. This is important because using an extinguisher on the wrong type of fire can have disastrous consequences. For example, if you use a water extinguisher on a fire involving any electrical equipment, you are risking electrocution and possible death.

Classifications are made up of letters and numbers. The letter part of an extinguisher classification tells us what fire type the appliance is suitable for. Each type of fire is given a class, which is designated by a single letter. When you look at the classification on the side of an extinguisher, what you see will be one or more letters, showing all the types of fire that the appliance is safe to use on. So there may be one letter, or several.

The other thing that fire extinguisher classifications do, is tell us something about how effective an extinguisher is, or 'how much' fire it can put out. This is indicated by a number which is shown next to the letter on the classification. A higher number indicates that the appliance can deal with a bigger fire. The numbers correspond directly to set fire tests that the extinguisher has been subjected to. The rating an appliance ends up with will generally relate to the actual amount (distances or areas) of fire that it was able to extinguish. For example a classification of 13 means that the appliance was able to extinguish 1.3m of fire in the test situation.

On every extinguisher you will see one or more letters, and a number, giving you important information about the type of fire you can use it on and how effective it is likely to be. This kind of information can be crucial when you have to make a decision about whether to tackle a fire or not.

There are slight differences between fire extinguisher classifications in the UK and in the US. The UK system is the same for whole of Europe and Australia too.

Extinguishers for dealing with fires involving everyday combustible matter such as paper, cardboard, wood or textiles are given an 'A' classification. This is the same in both the UK and US.

Extinguishers designed specifically for use on flammable liquids such as oils, spirits and petrol, are given a 'B' classification. Again, this classification is the same in the UK and US.

In the UK there is a separate class C rating for extinguishers that are safe to use on flammable gases, such as natural gas or propane. In the US this category is included in the 'B' classification.

Appliances that deal with fire on combustible metals have a 'D' classification in both the UK and US.

In the UK, electrical fires do not have a separate classification, though they are occasionally wrongly referred to as class 'E'. Electricity is viewed more as a cause of fire and source of ignition than a classification in the UK. Remove the electrical supply and the fire becomes a class A, B or whatever. In the US electrical fires are known as class 'C'.

Finally, the specialist appliances which are the only ones safe to use on burning deep fat fires are classed as 'F' in the UK and 'K' in the US.

Fire extinguisher classifications give you valuable information that you need if you are faced with a fire. The information on the extinguisher is only of use if you know for sure what is burning. If you have any doubt about what is actually on fire, you should not attempt to put it out.

Fire Extinguisher Ratings - Find Out About Fire Classifications and Fire Extinguisher Ratings

Fire Extinguisher Ratings - Find Out About Fire Classifications and Fire Extinguisher Ratings

ItemTitle

Fire extinguisher ratings are designed to indicate the type of fires they should be used on, and to give an indication of how effective they will be. Each fire extinguisher rating in expressed as a series of numbers and letters which indicate the classes of fire they can be used on the size of fire they are suitable for.

Different types of fires are classified by different letters, and fire extinguishers ratings may show several letters because they can be used on more than one type of fire. In terms of the size of fires the extinguisher can be used on, the number gives an indication of this, and generally speaking, the larger the number, the larger the fire that the appliance can deal with.

The numerical part of the fire extinguisher ratings relate directly to tests carried out to measure their effectiveness. A wooden crib test is one test that is used to measure how large a fire an appliance can deal with. A rating of 13A, for example, indicates that the extinguisher was able to put out 1.3m of the fire. The number on a fire extinguisher rating is therefore a very accurate indication of what each extinguisher can cope with.

As another example of the numerical rating, the test for measuring the effectiveness of extinguishers for use on flammable liquids refers to the approximate area of fire in square feet that it is able to extinguish. The specific tests vary with the different fire types, but the basic system of accurately measuring the extinguisher's effectiveness is the same.

It would seem obvious to think that the number on a fire extinguisher would increase with the size of it. This is generally true, but size is not the only factor that effects the number in the fire extinguisher rating. With water extinguishers, additives are often mixed with the water to increase their effectiveness, therefore you could have two appliances which are the same size, but which have different numerical ratings, because one is more effective than the other.

Fire Classifications - The UK and US Differences

As already mentioned, the letters used in fire extinguisher ratings refer to the classes of fire that they can be safely used on. We therefore need to look at these fire classifications first, before looking at the actual ratings for the various types of appliance.

The classifications for the UK and US are similar, but there are some differences, so I will show both. Europe and Australasia also use the same classification system as the UK. The following are the main classifications of fires, with US classes shown in brackets:

Class A (also Class A in US)

Any fire involving solid materials such as wood, card, paper, fabric, etc.

Class B (also Class B in US)

Class B fires involve flammable liquids including kerosene, oils, petrol, paints, diesel, etc.

Class C (comes under Class B in US)

A separate classification except in US, this category is for flammable gases, including butane, methane, etc.

Class D (also Class D in US)

The D Classification is for combustible metals or alloys, such as potassium, magnesium or titanium.

Electrical (Class C in US)

Electrical fires are sometimes known as Class E in the UK, but this is an error as there is no separate classification for electrical fires in the UK.

Class F (Class K in US)

Specifically relates to fires involving deep fat fryers (fats and oils).

Fire Extinguisher Ratings:

The following information shows the classes of fires covered by the different ypes of appliance:

Main fire extinguisher ratings shown refer to UK, with US ratings in brackets.

Water Extinguishers:

Classes of fire: A (class A in US)

Carbon Dioxide Extinguishers:

Classes of fire: Electrical, A, B and C (A, B and C in US)

Dry Powder Extinguishers:

Classes of fire: A, B, C and Electrical (A, B and C in US)

Wet Chemical Extinguishers:

Classes of fire: A, F

Foam Extinguishers:

Classes of fire: A and B (A and B in US)

Fire Extinguisher Ratings - Conclusions

Understanding fire classes and extinguisher ratings is important in order to be sure of using the correct type of appliance on any fire in your workplace. It can be very dangerous to use the wrong type of appliance on some fires, one of the most obvious examples being the use of water on an electrical fire. For this reason proper staff training is important for any staff who are required to use fire fighting equipment.

How to Convert a Wood Or Gas Fireplace to an Electric Fireplace

How to Convert a Wood Or Gas Fireplace to an Electric Fireplace

Samsung Galaxy
ItemTitle

Converting an existing wood or gas fireplace to a clean and energy efficient electric fireplace is simple and easy. You don't need the skills of a mason, a cabinetmaker, or an electrician to enjoy the comfort and ambiance provided by an electricity powered fireplace. These units are delivered to your door ready to be installed and enjoyed for many years to come. If you can open a box and plug in an electrical cord, you have all the skills you will need to convert a wood or gas fireplace to an electric fireplace.

Many people are afraid to try new ideas, simply because they are new. The uncertainties that come with trying to install something yourself can be intimidating. Installing an electricity powered fireplace in your apartment, condo, or home is as simple as plugging in a blender or a coffeemaker. At the same time, you will enjoy clean, inexpensive, supplemental heat for your home while enjoying all of the ambiance of a real fire.

Eliminate the Mess and Worry of a Wood Fireplace

Certainly, wood fireplaces have their appeal. The smell of a wood fire, the crackling burn of logs on a grate, and the sight of smoke rising from the chimney are all big attractions. At the same time, your wood fireplace can be pretty demanding. Cords of wood must be purchased, stored, and brought into the home. Very often, this means spiders, earwigs, and termites are also brought into your home. If the wood gets wet, you must go without a fire until it dries.

Once you have enjoyed your fire, the ashes must be collected and disposed of without causing a fire risk to your home or the neighborhood. Also, in this day of environmental awareness and responsibility, the smoke and other emissions must be considered. Creosote, which can build up in your chimney, must be removed by a professional to avoid the risk of fire and carbon monoxide poisoning. Once the winter has passed, your wood fireplace will go unused for most of the year.

Gas Fireplaces are Not without Risks

Gas fireplaces provide a greater measure of convenience than wood fireplaces, but they also carry their own risks. Gas fireplace pilot lights must be maintained and there are always concerns about gas leaks and venting problems. These maintenance requirements demand the use of a skilled professional to ensure your safety, adding extra cost to your gas fireplace.

Gas fireplaces generally cost 17 to 24 cents per hour to operate, whereas electric fireplaces provide realistic looking flames for about 3 cents per hour and flames with heat for around 8 to 12 cents an hour. Over time, one of these fireplaces can pay for itself while providing you with years of realistic looking flames, convenience, and comfortable heat.

These Inserts are Easy to Install

Electric fireplace inserts are easily installed in existing wood or gas fireplaces without any sort of renovation. You do not need a contractor or any other assistance. When your electric unit arrives, you simply open the box, place it in your existing fireplace opening, and plug it in. It has no maintenance requirements and you have the added convenience of being able to start your fireplace from the comfort of your easy chair with a remote.

The flame technology used in these fireplaces provides you with all of the ambiance of a real fire without any of the mess, inconvenience, or risks. Your electricity powered fireplace can provide supplemental heat for up to 400 square feet with 4700 BTUs per hour, allowing you to lower your thermostat and your heating bill. Electric fireplace logs and ember beds provide an attractive ambiance and you can operate your electric unit with or without heat.

The Flexibility of Fire with or without Heat

Unlike wood and gas fireplaces, you can enjoy sitting in front of your electric fireplace logs at any time of the year. These fireplaces allow you to operate the flame and heat independently of each other for year round enjoyment. You can use the flame alone if you want the ambiance of a fire without the heat, even in the middle of summer. Obviously, this is not possible with wood or gas.

Fireplaces serve as a wonderful gathering place, providing warmth and other comforts to family, friends, and visitors. Your realistic looking electric fireplace logs and ember bed will provide you with everything good about a fireplace without any of the negatives. Your fireplace can be installed in a matter of minutes and turned on with the push of a button. You get the best of both worlds with an electric fireplace and a lower cost. Once you discover the ease, convenience, and ambiance that this type of fireplace provides, you may very well decide to invest in a freestanding fireplace for some other part of your home. Furniture quality Amish fireplaces, modern corner units, and every style in between are available for your comfort and enjoyment.

Fixing That Annoying Blinking Fluorescent Light

Samsung Galaxy
ItemTitle

So now its time to roll up our sleeves and get to work. There are some very important guidelines to follow when doing electrical work:

-MAKE SURE THE POWER IS OFF AND THERE IS NO CHANCE OF IT ACCIDENTALLY BEING TURNED ON WHILE WORKING ON IT.
-Have all the materials you will need for your project. There is nothing worse than being half way in your project to find out you don't have everything you need.
-Have the right tool for the job your doing

Following our safety guide we need to turn the power off to the light. You can just turn the switch off to the light and that will remove power, but we need to make sure nobody will accidentally turn it on when your working on it. So find your fuse box or circuit panel and shut the breaker off as well. Look for breaker tags such as gen lighting, or lighting.

Now that we know we are safe to work on the fluorescent light here are the tools you will need:

-A fiberglass ladder (make sure it is fiberglass when working with electricity because fiberglass does not conduct electricity.)
-Lineman pliers
-Nut driver
-Wire strippers
-Voltage tester

Now that we have our tools we need to rule out some simple fixes. I have been on calls that I felt so bad charging a customer for something they easily could have done themselves. Number one thing to do is replace the bulb. Keep in mind there are two types most commonly found and they are T-12 and T-8. The T-12 is a fat tube and a T-8 is thin in circumference, that's the easiest way to figure out what it is. If your still not sure remove the bulb and look at the end of the tube and there will be a model number on it with either T-12 of T-8 in or around that area.

Ok, so we changed the bulb and it's not the fix. The problem most likely lies in the ballast. By removing the center cover we can access the ballast, you should see wire colors of black, red, blue, yellow, white and green. Before you remove anything you need to make sure you have the right type of ballast. Make sure the model numbers are the same and the type of ballast is the same. All newer fixtures use electronic ballasts, while older models might use rapid start, and magnetic type ballasts as some examples. We know we have the right ballast so what I do before I even remove the ballast is take the black and white wire from the ceiling box and remove it from the ballast without touching the bare copper and test them with your voltage tester to make absolute sure they are dead, cap each one with a wire nut, these wires are what give power to the ballast.

Look at the colors and where there connected to. I then cut the wires with my linesmans pliers after the wire nut. I do this because when you put the new ballast in it will have the same colored leads as the old one, so you can use it to help you reconnect the colors of wires to the light. After you cut the wires remove the ballast with your nut driver making sure not to lose that nut you will need it later!!! CAUTION: The ballast may be hot to the touch, put some gloves on or use a rag when handling the ballast. Install the new ballast by aligning it into the slots and the hole where the nut was. Simply fasten the nut down and the ballast should now be secured to the fixture. Now connect blue to blue, red to red, yellow to yellow using orange wire nuts. Next hook up the black wire being careful because this is your "HOT" wire to the black and the white to the white. One thing you need to do when connecting the wires is to make sure that you twist your wires together, do not just rely on the wire nut. If you do not twist your wires it could cause a fire by not having a good connection.

Place the cover back on the fixture, put some new lamps in and your done.

Turn the breaker back on at the panel, turn the switch on and let there be light. Now the bragging starts.

An in Depth Look at Yamaha Generator EF2600

Samsung Galaxy
ItemTitle

Portable generators for personal use have become one of the more recognized necessities for emergencies. With the loss of power due to problems such as storms, vehicle accidents, the falling of trees, malfunction at a power company, etc, many people have come to realize the importance of portable generators. Yamaha generators create a wide variety of generators to fit every need for power, size, and fuel consumption. They build both consumer and industrial use generators. One of their cheapest and most effective premium generators for consumer use is the EF2600 model.

With a price tag of only 8, the EF2600 is a Yamaha generator that will not break any bank accounts. This is a highly affordable model compared to some consumer generators that can cost well over ,500. This makes the possibility of owning and using a generator open to people of all types. Furthermore, with the price of fuel fluctuating so rapidly, consumers will find greater use for a generator that is fuel efficient. The EF2600 has a decently sized 3.2 gallon gas tank. However, even with so little fuel, the EF2600 can still put out 2600 watts of power for 11 hours. This is very useful for households who need to run appliances for several hours at a time. With the EF2600, even a household without power for an extended length of time can still run and operate without excessive costs of fuel.

Another problem that is commonly seen with portable generators is that they are not as portable as they are made out to be. Heavy generators can make it difficult for both young, old, women, and those without much strength to move and start them. However, at only 90 pounds, the EF2600 is a relatively light generator. This makes it possible to be used by most people in case of any emergency. Not only that, but the EF2600 is quite rugged as well. It has a full rollover cage in the event that it happens to fall over. This not only prevents the generator from being damaged, but also makes it easier to get upright again.

There are several other features of the EF2600 that make it a great choice for households who desire to have a good generator at a reasonable price. The engine is a 4-stroke, single cylinder, with an overhead valve and is air-cooled. This generator boasts an auto-decompression system as well as an adjustable governor and brushless alternator. There is also an AC non-thermal breaker and a ground fault circuit interrupter.

The EF2600 also makes is convenient to check the oil, fuel, and volts that are being put out. There is a convenient fuel and oil gauge that allows the user to see precisely how much is left in the generator. This helps to prevent unwanted stalls in powers. Another feature of the EF2600 is the specially designed muffler. This allows the house to have power without the nuisance of not being able to hear anything over the generator.

Overall, the EF2600 is a wonderful product of Yamaha generators. It offers affordability and power within a compact design that can fit in almost any household.

AR 15 Brass Catcher - Most Are Junk and Here's Why!

Samsung Galaxy

There are a number of brass catchers available that will fit an AR 15 but not all are created equal. I reload my own ammo so it's important for me to save every single brass casing that I fire. Years ago I would fire through a magazine and then stop and police up my area, picking up all the brass. What a pain in that butt! I especially did not enjoy this exercise when there was snow on the ground and I had to dig through it to find the brass. Didn't take long to make my hands freeze and make me wish there was a better way.

So I started trying out different brass catching methods.

Obviously a brass catcher attached to your gun it probably the best way to go.

I picked up a really inexpensive catcher at a gun show to try out. Right away I was not impressed. The bag that the brass go into was made out of this mesh material that would snag on brush and trees. If I ever laid my gun down the mesh would always seems to snag onto something.

So my first recommendation is be aware of the material your brass catcher is made from. Mesh snags, plastic is loud. The best I've found is a heavy canvas like material. This doesn't catch or snag on stuff and it very quiet when you're stalking your game.

My next gripe with my first catcher was the way it attached to my gun. It was not very securely attached and when the mesh would snag it would pull the catcher off my gun. Also, the catching bag rested right against the side of my gun making it difficult to release the magazine.

If your catcher has any metal on it make sure it is rubber coated to that it won't scratch up your gun!

Once you go through a couple of magazines you will need to empty the brass catcher. This can be a pain as well. My first one had a zipper at the bottom of the bag that was hard to open and would practically jam closed if I got any dirt or mud in it.

I guess I sound pretty anti-brass catcher don't I? There are great brass catchers that work extremely well. Here's a list of what I would look for before you buy.

1. Cloth/Canvas bag for catching brass. Not Mesh or plastic. Think about noise and snags.

2. Securely and correctly attaches to your gun. Make sure any metal parts touching your gun are rubber coated or protected so they don't scratch your gun.

3. Check to see if the brass catcher is a 'good fit'. Make sure it's not in the way and you can get to your mag release.

4. Try to avoid release/empty mechanisms that can get jammed up with dirt. Zippers generally do this. Can you release your brass while the catcher is still attached to your gun?

Tips on Fiber Optic Christmas Trees

Samsung Galaxy
ItemTitle

Many people are not aware of what a Fiber Optic Christmas tree is exactly, or what this type of tree can add to your holiday decorating theme this year for Christmas.

A Fiber Optic Christmas tree has strands of pure glass or see through plastic tube surrounded by a reflective coating. Light can go into one end of the strand and for long distances through each strand to the end where it shines into the room.

The result is a spectacular light show of any color imaginable that change on a color wheel. The use of fiber optics for Christmas trees is a great idea in its inventive applications using this form of light display for many reasons.

An artificial tree can change your household Christmas decorating theme into a fabulously attractive display of twinkling lights that changes the shade from one color into a more dazzling array of other colors. In addition you can add a new type of Christmas tree you can decorate the front of your home's entrances with smaller LED Fiber-Optic Tree.

LED trees or as they come straight to your door ready to install and enjoy. You an also order this type of tree all decorated or add your own assortment of decorations to complete the look your personalized Fiber Optic Christmas Tree.

You can add garlands of flowers, ribbons, shells or candy to the mix and have an adorably attractive Christmas Tree. Or you may chose to leave the Tree as is, and concentrate on decorating other parts of the living room or get another tree for another room as well.

This style of tree does not give out heat, only light so they are a must for fire safety. The LED lights provide a 200,000 lifetime span of hours of pure enjoyment of your special holiday display. That works out to about 20 Christmas years of life out of your one purchase so it is more economical and energy efficient than other types or natural trees.

You can cover your tree with cotton strands to simulate snow, or decorated with glass ornaments as there is no heat given off therefore no fear of fire hazards. Today with young and modern customers just any old tree will not do for a Christmas holiday. If you pick up any old tree at any old store you will be setting for less and you will get less for your money as they quality is just not present.

A smart and wise investment is a LED fiber Optic Christmas Tree because they are very energy efficient using ten times less in energy that the average Christmas bulbs. Fiber optic Christmas Trees last up to 20 years and therefore are more economical than other trees.

This type of tree is also very safe since they produce no heat there is no danger of catching fire like a real tree can as it dries out in your living room.

The Fiber Optic type of Christmas tree is virtually indestructible and the bulbs are not connected to each other - if one bulb burns out it does not affect the whole tree. Fiber optic Christmas Trees come in 4, 5 feet tall for apartments, bedrooms spare rooms, or condo apartments. The larger trees range from 5 feet or up to 10 feet tall in green, white or frosted colors.

The most magnificent White Fiber Optic Tree I have seen is a Pre Lit Artificial Tree, with L.E.D. circuit technology and has over 9,900 optic light tips for a dazzling display. The Fiber optic Tree with the easy set up in minutes, can be the most beautiful acquisition for any style of home.

There are no motors of fans or color wheels needed with this Christmas Tree and no need of halogen bulbs that require a fan to cool them off. The tree has reinforced branches for extra strength if you wished to add decorations and more ornaments.

In summary the benefits of a Fiber Optic Christmas Tree are many and the savings on energy are enormous as well. If your in the market for a new tree this year you should look at this type of tree and it will be the most spectacular Christmas decoration of your home.
